2013 was a banner year for Filter of Hope as 5,340 portable water filters were distributed and installed in over 30 countries providing up to 150 gallons a day of clean, safe water for thousands of people living in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. That adds up to over 291 million gallons of clean water every year for these families.

At the beginning of 2013, Filter of Hope had water filters in use in only two countries: the Dominican Republic and Haiti. In less than 12 months, the organization had filters in 30 developing countries around the world.

This unprecedented growth is due to Filter of Hope’s new partnerships with Convoy of Hope, Samaritan’s Purse, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, and other organizations. These non-profits already have “boots on the ground” providing aid and assistance in these countries and are now distributing the Filter of Hope water filters. Not only providing much needed distribution, these strategic partnerships also mean that Filter of Hope no longer needs to be directly involved with the installation of filters. They can instead use the time and money saved on getting more filters into families’ homes worldwide.

ERASE Racism has received a $ 20,000 grant from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund to hire a Long Island Organizer (“Organizer”). The Organizer will assist in devising and implementing local campaigns to advance fair housing including: developing and executing an outreach strategy; developing new alliances to link grassroots groups with broader policy issues; and ensuring that people of color are being adequately served by organizations providing Hurricane Sandy relief services. The organizer will also strengthen relationships with other nonprofit organizations and coalitions that share ERASE Racism’s mission.

When Target’s credit card system was hacked, millions of people were left holding the (red and white) bag. And imagine how the passengers on the 950 flights that American Airlines cancelled during the week of Thanksgiving felt. We’ve all had a Murphy’s Law kind of day. Just when you’re at your busiest, something goes awry. It can take on many frustrating forms – a broken Internet connection, a cancelled flight, a lost insurance card at the pharmacy – and rarely, if ever, do these problems hit at a time that you have hours to spend resolving them.

In his latest Huffington Post article, “Don’t Take ‘No’ for an Answer: Tips for Going Straight to the Top to Resolve Problems,” attorney and author Jack Garson provides a list of tactics to use when you need answers fast. Garson is no stranger to “battling a behemoth,” as he calls it. His own law firm’s phone lines went down at a very inconvenient time (is there ever a good time to lose your phone lines?) and the fact that they had paid their bill on time meant nothing to the phone company. It wasn’t until Garson took his problem up the ranks of the phone company and enlisted the help of an elected official that their lines were restored.

Persistence and a little leverage can go a long way, as Garson explains:

Go to the top of the organization. If you’re not getting the answers you want, ask for a supervisor. If they won’t connect you, do a little research and call the head honcho.
Sometimes it’s helpful to mention bringing the problem to an elected or law enforcement official. This usually helps get the ball rolling.
Find out where the company is the most vulnerable. It might take some digging, but if you can uncover and mention an area where the company feels insecure, they might be more willing to talk to you.

The social network aims at “Connecting the Automotive World” by allowing enthusiasts to exhibit their collection of cars, car parts and accessories online with fellow enthusiasts. Maxime Rassi, Creator and President, says Garagesocial resulted from “the realization that we can categorize auto related activity on the web under four basic needs: networking, commerce, entertainment and news. The platform unites these four needs in perfect harmony.”

“We have created the ultimate automotive social network,” says Rassi. Since their beta launch, Garagesocial has already exceeded over 1000 new signups. Rassi and his team have been working on getting the platform ready for their broader public launch in early 2014. As of now, company pages for automotive related business to display their inventory will be added to the site. A blogging and news section has been announced to be released shortly.

Recently, Garagesocial exhibited at the annual SEMA Show from November 5-8, 2013 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. A press conference and a live demonstration of the networking site was held at the SEMA Show Media Center. The Boston start-up plans on exhibiting this upcoming March at the 2014 SXSW Interactive Trade Show in Austin, Texas and is making an appearance at the 2014 Daytona Race in Florida.

As Tylenol lawsuits ( continue to mount in courts around the country, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that a new study has found that taking acetaminophen in combination with even small amounts of alcohol may be associated with an increased risk for kidney damage. According to a report from HealthDay News, the study, which was presented last month at the American Public Health Association’s annual meeting in Boston, looked at data from more than 10,000 people who had been surveyed about their alcohol consumption, use of acetaminophen and health problems. Almost half of the respondents who reported combining acetaminophen with alcohol also reported kidney dysfunction. *

“Dozens of lawsuits are now pending in federal court that allege a link between the use of Tylenol and liver damage. According to court documents, at least 100 Tylenol lawsuits alleging acetaminophen can cause liver damage, even when taken as directed, are currently pending in a multidistrict litigation now underway in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania. All of these lawsuits similarly allege that Johnson & Johnson failed to provide consumers with adequate warnings about the potential effects of acetaminophen use on the liver, including liver failure and the need for a liver transplant. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the U.S. between 1998 and 2003. From 1990 to 1998, acetaminophen was blamed for 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths annually. Two years ago, the FDA reduced the amount of acetaminophen that prescription drugs can contain to 325 milligrams per two pills. **

Johnson & Johnson announced over the summer it was adding more prominent, red-lettered warnings to the labels of Tylenol products regarding the potential for severe liver damage. According to a report from, Extra Strength Tylenol – which contains 500 milligrams of acetaminophen per tablet – was to appear with the warnings in October. The modified labels will begin appearing on other Tylenol-brand medications in the coming months.***
