“Ubi Cilembu” goes to International Markets

Agriculture Minister Suswono held an official ceremony in Jakarta on Thursday to mark the inaugural export of local products, including the famous ubi cilembu (sweet potato), to Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong.

The Ubi Cilembu Agribusiness Pioneer Group (KAUCP) was ready to start exporting ubi cilembu to Hong Kong and Singapore next month and to Thailand in September, kompas.com reported on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Alamanda Farmers Group through CV Rian Karya will begin to export lucku bamboo products to Azerbaijan, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia in August.

In September, they plan to send the bamboo to the Netherlands and Turkey.

Suswono also certified CV Sumber Buah during the ceremony, allowing the company to export mangoes to Dubai in August.

The minister said that the exports were part of the government’s efforts to better promote Indonesian products in the international market.

During the ceremony, the 40 agribusiness groups that participate in the export program signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration in improving their products, to increase their competitiveness in the global market.

The Sari Buah Tabanan group, for instance, is set to work with giant retailer PT Carrefour to develop its mangosteens. (nfo)

November 2013 Small Business Lending Index Gives Edge to Alternative Lenders When It Comes to Approval Rates

Though nowhere near pre-recession levels, the second half of 2013 saw an uptick in small business lending from traditional lenders, like big banks. But with fewer than 20% of small business loan applications receiving approval, it is not a surprise that alternative lenders had a big year, as they sought to fill the small business financing gap.

In fact, the approval gap for small business financing is striking. While banks approved fewer than one small business loan application out of every five submitted in 2013, the Biz2Credit Small Business Lending Index for November 2013 noted that alternative lenders are able to approve financing for about two thirds of all small business financing applications received.

Most dental practices are small businesses, and depend on consumers having adequate disposable income to afford dental services not covered by insurance, so they face the same cash flow and growth financing challenges as retail counterparts. Since many U.S. consumers experienced a decrease in disposable income and some lost a portion (or even all) employer-provided benefits during the Great Recession, many dentist offices experienced a corresponding decline in revenue as well.

This kind of cash flow constriction limits the ability of dental practices to execute the kind of marketing campaigns needed to attract new patients, make repairs to equipment or facilities, renovate, purchase new equipment or expand. Escalating external competition from online and mainstream adult product retailers, which increasingly carry vibrators and other erotica, has reduced the stigma associated with shopping at adult stores. According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Andrew Krabeepetcharat, “As consumers see more sex paraphernalia featured on TV and in stores like Walmart, such items shift from taboo toward more of a social norm.” For example, Fifty Shades of Grey, an international best-selling book that features erotica, popularized certain sex enhancement products and, thus, helped industry sales spike an estimated 7.5% in 2013 to $ 609.8 million. This one-year jump has pushed annualized revenue growth to 12.5% annually on average since 2008. Countercyclically, the industry performed especially well when disposable income dipped during the Great Recession because consumers were less likely to spend on substitute entertainment, like eating out or going to the movies.

Nonetheless, tighter consumer budgets did result in more sales of cheaper items during the past five years. Heightened consumer price sensitivity and external competition also pressured adult store operators to offer promotional pricing. Although this boosted sales volumes, profit contracted between 2008 and 2013. Furthermore, underperforming retailers exited the Adult Stores industry during the Great Recession as a result of escalating competition, a dip in profitability and tight lending conditions. Consequently, the number of enterprises expanded at a slower rate than revenue, increasing at an annualized rate of 9.6% during the past five years to 3,838 stores in 2013.

Through 2018, the industry is anticipated to benefit from rising disposable income. Growing social acceptance of sex paraphernalia is also expected to push up revenue, resulting in 5.4% annualized five-year growth to $ 792.0 million in 2018. “Higher demand and disposable income are also estimated to facilitate profit expansion,” says Krabeepetcharat. Nonetheless, adult stores will continue to compete with an increasing number of mainstream retailers and will have to rely on superior staff and a wide selection of specialty products to entice consumers to return to their establishments.

The Adult Stores industry exhibits a low level of market share concentration. The industry is highly fragmented, with a large number of small players that are privately owned and operated. During the past five years, market share concentration has risen due to external competition from e-commerce sites that sell sex toys and pornographic material. As a result of this increased demand from online retailers, some small independently owned adult stores have been forced to close down. This trend has forced poorly performing establishments to consolidate or exit the industry completely. Social trends have boosted demand for industry stores, though, and name-brand stores such as Adam & Eve and Hustler Hollywood are becoming more desirable. As a result, the number of industry establishments grew at an average annual rate of 9.9% to an estimated 3,973 stores in the five years to 2013.

Six days into the moment-filled USO holiday tour, the singer has visited with, dined alongside and performed for hundreds of troops stationed at the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing as well as Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) Walton, Pasab, Lindsey and Simmons in the Middle East.

Busy bringing the USO’s “Every Moment Counts” campaign to life, Pickler traveled to two remote forward operation bases on Christmas Eve and helped USO volunteers deliver hundreds of gifts to 800 service members as part of the 2013 USO Christmas Convoy. Among the items she helped deliver to FOB Lindsey and Simmons were a TV, an Xbox, video games, movies, cameras, cell phones and USO Care Packages.

Designed to bring a touch of holiday happiness to troops stationed in the most isolated front line outposts where the small comforts of home are especially hard to come by, the USO Holiday Convoy has been in operation since 2010.
