Generations of Drug-Free Marshals Celebrate the Holiday Season

Generations of Drug-Free Marshals Celebrate the Holiday Season

Two generations of Drug-Free Marshals sang Christmas Carols at the annual Drug-Free Marshals Christmas Festival at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto in December 2013.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 24, 2013

The theme of the Drug-Free Marshals Christmas Festival at Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto in December 2013 was: “Ask children if they want a drug-free community and they will tell you yes and why!”

A grassroots initiative established in 1993, the Drug-Free Marshals has grown to a global movement of kids telling other kids about the harmful effects of drugs.

This annual Drug-Free Marshals festival encourages kids to “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life” with a seasonal celebration that includes hot chocolate, arts and crafts, and distribution of The Truth About Drugs educational booklets. Two generations of Drug-Free Marshals took the stage to entertain the crowd with Christmas carols. The event ended with a visit from Santa bringing toys for all the kids.

Scientologists on five continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the facts about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating drug abuse through education.

It has been conclusively proven that when young people are provided with the truth about drugs—factual information on what drugs are and what they do—usage rates drop commensurately.

The Church of Scientology has published a brochure, Scientology: How We Help—The Truth About Drugs, Creating a Drug-Free World, to meet requests for more information about the drug education and prevention initiative it supports. To learn more or read the brochure, visit the Scientology website.

Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “The planet has hit a barrier which prevents any widespread social progress—drugs and other biochemical substances. These can put people into a condition which not only prohibits and destroys physical health but which can prevent any stable advancement in mental or spiritual well-being.”

NewVo Beauty Responds to Article Regarding How to Avoid Accidents Related to Flat Irons This Holiday Season

NewVo Beauty Responds to Article Regarding How to Avoid Accidents Related to Flat Irons This Holiday Season

Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) December 24, 2013

Online beauty supply store NewVo Beauty comments on an article discussing the rise in accidents related to flat irons due to the approaching party season, and how to avoid them.

In an article published by NY Daily News on December 9th titled “Part season sparks rise in hair-straightening injuries: study,” ways to avoid heat injuries while using heat styling tools, like flat irons, are discussed. The article mentions that heat styling tools can reach up to 450 degrees and can take up to fifteen minutes to cool off after use. The article also suggests placing all heat styling tools in heat-resistant pouches after use to protect all users and those around them, particularly children, from burns.

Sara Greenstone, a representative from the online beauty supply store NewVo Beauty, says, “Using heat styling tools are a great way to style hair effortlessly, especially during the holiday season. But when using them, you must always use caution. While using heat styling tools, be mindful of the hot plates; always hold the heat styling tool by the safe, heat-resistant handles. It takes time for the styling tool to cool off, so place it in a safe place, such as a drawer or in a pouch designed for heat styling tools, to ensure no heat related injuries occur.”

Greenstone says, “It is also important to note that heat styling tools can cause hair damage. When used properly, you can avoid damage and still achieve gorgeous, sleek hair. Using products that protect against thermal styling will combat any possible heat damage. Products like Pureology Colour Max UV Hair Colour Defense are great for fighting any effects from thermal styling tools, and even environmental damages like the sun.”

NewVo Beauty sells over 5,000 professional beauty salon products. Committed to providing quality, hard-to-find premium products and great service, NewVo Beauty offers high-demand salon merchandise at affordable prices. They’re available 24/7 to answer any queries to ensure customers have a great buying experience.

Make a Difference This Holiday Season with a Volunteer Vacation: the Gift That Really Keeps On Giving

Make a Difference This Holiday Season with a Volunteer Vacation: the Gift That Really Keeps On Giving

Affordable Volunteer Abroad, Intern Abroad, Cultural Education, Language Immersion, and Gap Year Programs

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) December 24, 2013

During this joyful time of feasting and celebration, it’s sometimes easy to forget that there are billions of people who can’t afford even the most basic necessities, let alone the indulgences of the holiday season. We need to remember that this time of year is as much about giving as it is receiving.

With CrossContinental.org, a simple act of charity can become the experience of a lifetime. This organization places willing workers in projects abroad, where they are able to give hands-on assistance to those in need. These “volunteer vacations” offer opportunities for everyday people to give the gifts of time, compassion, perspective, and joy.

Many students and professionals eagerly prepare for this unique holiday experience, anticipating a season of personal growth, cultural immersion and social responsibility. The opportunity to combine educational and professional advancement with an overseas experience has not been lost on these travelers.

Providing numerous program options, Cross-Continental matches personal interests with each desired destination, creating a personalized experience that is best suited to each person’s needs. Opportunities such as orphanage work, assisting at a hospital, or teaching in schools, all give hope to impoverished families, as well as a renewed sense of purpose to the volunteers themselves. As many international volunteers have realized, overseas work also adds an important facet to one’s resume or post-secondary applications, giving a desirable edge over future competition.

Volunteer Vacations and Wildlife Safaris in East Africa

With a vast array of areas in which to volunteer, these vacations are accessible to everyone who is willing to help. Hong Kong native Grace Lau will spend her Christmas and the New Year in Kenya, East Africa, volunteering in a variety of fields. While her main focus will be caring for the elderly, she also plans to conduct interviews, take photographs and work on her journalism portfolio, as well as squeeze in a weekend wildlife safari at the Maasai Mara National Reserve to complete her experience.

International Internships in Latin America

The testimonies from past Cross-Continental interns are enough to pique anyone’s interest in these vacations, and encourage new travelers to join the ranks. Jessica Hoffman of Boston, Massachusetts, is planning her New Year’s celebration in Ecuador this year, where she will participate in a microfinance project. These microfinance projects are instrumental in building a sustainable economy in many emerging economies, teaching essential financial knowledge and aiding locals in their fight against poverty. When asked about her upcoming voyage, Hoffman’s answer was simple and genuine. “I am getting very excited!”

University of Victoria business student Celia Lin is preparing for her upcoming trip to Mexico, where she will enjoy her first tropical Christmas and earn volunteer hours serving in the local community.

Celebrating Chinese New Year in China

Volunteer Matthew De Corrado from Australia will celebrate both Western and Chinese New Year with a welcoming host family in China. Matthew joined the program in order to practice and learn more Mandarin, absorb life in a different culture, gain a good appreciation of a different way of life, and most importantly make a positive contribution to society. Matthew says, “I searched everywhere for a volunteer agency that fit my criteria, and Cross Continental ticked all the boxes. Cross Continental has the flexibility which the other [organizations] don’t have, its pricing is not a barrier to entry which is important to me as a University student, and its programs are meaningful.”

Community Development Internships in Asia

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native Sam Carter will be spending her holidays abroad this year as well, completing a Community Development Internship in Nepal. Carter says, “I am very excited for my upcoming trip to Nepal. I was recently awarded a grant to do research while I am there, which will reimburse me for my expenses [like] plane tickets [and] home stay.”

What other gift can offer the experience of a new culture, the chance to learn and perfect new skills, connect like-minded travelers from around the world, and provide the opportunity to truly change lives–including that of the volunteer? It may be cliché, but a volunteer vacation really is a gift that keeps on giving.

Access free resources or plan a life-changing trip at http://www.CrossContinental.org.

Angel MedFlight Brings Michael Henkel, a Bone Marrow Donor, from Germany to Meet Lori McFate in Iowa For a Holiday Homecoming

Angel MedFlight Brings Michael Henkel, a Bone Marrow Donor, from Germany to Meet Lori McFate in Iowa For a Holiday Homecoming

(PRWEB) December 24, 2013

The public voted for five finalists in Angel MedFlight Air Ambulance’s first Holiday Homecoming campaign, and the public’s choice was Lori McFate from Bettendorf, Iowa. The goal of this inaugural campaign was to give back by helping someone reunite or connect with a loved one and allowing the community to determine the recipient of the gift.

Lori nominated Michael, who donated bone marrow through the international registry and ultimately, in her words, saved her life. For more than seven years they have waited to meet as they now share the same DNA and consider themselves family. She asked to be considered and fly home this man who gave her the ultimate gift, life.

“By the grace of God, Michael came onto the international registry just when I needed him and agreed to be my ‘perfect match’ bone marrow donor!”, stated Lori McFate. “Thanks to Michael’s good health, unselfishness, willingness and compassion – I am alive today.”

Interested participants submitted an essay of 500 words or less, on why their nominee should be chosen for the homecoming flight. The promotion was open to anyone and all stories were encouraged.

As a surprise gift, born from the generosity of Angel MedFlight’s owner, Jeremy Freer, the other four finalists will receive Southwest airline gift cards to help them fly home their nominated loved one at a time of their choice.

“We were overwhelmed by the response to this campaign,” stated Cassandra Graper, Chief Strategy Officer at Angel MedFlight. “So many people experience real, everyday challenges from health to finances to distance – and we feel privileged that we are able to help others this holiday. We will definitely offer another Holiday Homecoming promotion in 2014.”

Michael will fly to Iowa on December 28 to meet Lori in person for the very first time. As a keepsake, the flight and meeting will be professionally captured by Angel MedFlight’s Emmy -winning videography team.

Chemist Direct warns against excessive binge drinking during the holiday season

Chemist Direct warns against excessive binge drinking during the holiday season

Binge Drinking Detrimental to Health

London (PRWEB UK) 25 December 2013

Government figures show 10 million adults in England regularly exceed the recommended daily limits, increasing their risk of serious illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, liver disease and various cancers. NHS guidelines advise no more than two to three units a day for women or three to four units for men – roughly equal to a large glass of wine for women and two pints of beer for men. 2

The British combine Northern European volumes of consumption with frequency resembling that of Southern Europe and this prevalence to drinking more than the weekly guidelines increases by 15 per cent in men and 11 per cent in women. That equates to 80 drinks over the course of the average holiday, or well over 200 units of alcohol.

More than a quarter said they ended up drinking three times more than normal. Men are more likely to binge drink (up to 81 percent of alcohol binges are done by men) than women and men are also more likely to develop alcohol dependence than women. But 70% of the 3,500 adults questioned by the Department of Health said they plan to cut back. 3

Researchers also found that almost 30 per cent of alcohol consumed in 2005 was “unrecorded” alcohol — referring to alcohol not intended for consumption, home-brewed alcohol, and illegally produced alcohol. In some regions, unrecorded alcohol constituted more than half of all alcohol consumed.

“The amount of unrecorded alcohol consumed is a particular problem, as its consumption is not impacted by public health alcohol policies, such as taxation, which can moderate consumption,” said Dr. Jürgen Rehm, a study author and director of CAMH’s Social and Epidemiological Research Department.

However, this definition does not apply to everyone because the tolerance and the speed of drinking in a session varies from person to person. People who are homozygous for the ALDH2 gene are less likely to binge drink due to severe adverse effects which occur even with moderate amounts of alcohol consumption. Binge drinking increases the risk of heart attack. It could cause you to vomit and if you’re sick when very drunk you could breathe in your own vomit and suffocate. 4

Symptoms of Intoxication:

Loss of balance, concentration and inhibitions, headache (due to dehydration), irrational behaviour such as arguments or violence, memory loss, blackouts, drowsiness
    Blurred vision
    Slurred speech
    Rapid pulse
    Breathing problems
    Trembling hands, pins and needles
    Upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhoea
    Hypoglycaemia
Impaired sexual performance, sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies due to lack of inhibition when drunk, impotence in men
Bruising and cuts due to falling when drunk

*Short-term effects may be felt on the same or following day

As a reaction to the binge drinking epidemic in Britain, several charities have been created to raise awareness of the dangers of binge drinking and promote responsible drinking. Chemist Direct’s Pharmaceutical Superintendent, Omar El-Gohary, has this advice to add:

“When drinking over the holiday’s, try to pace yourself, avoid drinking more than you are used to and avoid drinking so much that you get drunk. This is even more important if you are out in risky or unfamiliar circumstances. You can easily lose control of what you do or say and may make risky decisions, thinking you’re invulnerable”.

“In addition to long term health risks of drinking to excess such as liver cirrhosis, kidney failure, diabetes and reduced fertility, drinking too much alcohol can lead to alcohol poisoning.
